Iran to host 2016 West Asian Games

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) – The OCA Executive Board sat their 66th meeting in Tehran and announced Tehran as the host of WAG 2016.

The Executive Board of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) held its 66th meeting in Tehran and concluded to set the Islamic Republic of Iran to host the fourth edition of West Asian Games in 2016.

The OCA is a governing body of sports in Asia, currently with 45 member National Olympic Committees. The current president is Sheikh Fahad Al-Sabah. The oldest NOC is from Japan and the Philippines, recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1911; whereas East Timor is the newest, joining in 2003. The headquarters of OCA are located at Kuwait City.

West Asian Games (also known as WAG & formerly known as West Asian Games Federation (WAGF)) is a multi-sport event held every 4 years among the athletes from West Asia. At present, WAG is joined by thirteen members namely Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

The West Asian Games was first organized in Tehran, Iran and was considered as the first of its kind. The success of the Games led to the creation of the West Asian Games Federation (WAGF) and the intention of hosting the Games every 4 years.

The 66th OCA Executive Board meeting was held at the Parsian Azadi Hotel in Tehran, Iran, on Thursday.
